Competitor SEO Analysis: The 2026 Operator's Guide
A repeatable framework for competitor SEO analysis — keyword gaps, content velocity, link gain, share of voice and reverse-engineering wins.
Most competitor analysis lives in a one-time slide deck. The teams that actually compound run the same five-step analysis once a quarter — and act on it.
1. Pick the right competitors
Your search competitors aren't always your business competitors. Use share-of-voice overlap on your money keywords to pick a list of three to five real SERP competitors.
2. Map the keyword gap
Pull every keyword each competitor ranks for that you don't. Filter by intent and commercial value. The result is a prioritised content plan, not a wish list.
3. Audit content velocity
Count their new URLs per month for the last six months. If their velocity is twice yours, your topical authority gap is widening every week you wait.
4. Map link gain
Track referring domains gained per month per competitor. Spikes correlate with PR campaigns or linkable assets — both are reverse-engineerable.
5. Reverse-engineer the wins
Pick the top five URLs that drove the biggest traffic gains for each competitor in the last quarter. Read them, screenshot the SERPs, document what they did differently. Ship your better version.
